How to get free shipping on large items! This is an excerpt from an email my sister sent me yesterday! Thanks Laura!

Yesterday I ordered ella’s new castle toddler bed. It’s huge and shipping was going to be $90-$150, yeah, crazy I know. But I ordered from walmart and did their site-to-store and it was free shipping. I saved myself big bucks.

Save money on food without couponing with Angel Food Ministries- This is an excerpt from an email my friend Alison sent me! Thanks Alison!

Check out if there is an Angel Food Ministries in your area. There are locations all across the USA, so many of your friends from all over could look into it. I’ll attach a link because it’s kind of hard to understand until you order for yourself the first time. http://www.angelfoodministries.com/ Basically a church becomes a host site as an out reach to their community. You can choose a host site even if it is not your home church. Our church just joined AFM’s about a year ago and it has been great not only for our family but lots of families in and outside of our church. Once a month people place a prepaid order for a ‘box of food’ at the church. Usually two weeks later you go to the church at a designated time and get your box of food (the church will have pick-uped the food early that morning from a drop-off/pick-up point). The box of food is different every month. It is supposed to make 5-7 meals for a family of 4 for just $30. It will have meat, veggies, eggs, etc. They say each $30 box contains $60-80 worth of groceries. The HUGE savings and quality comes with their monthly specials. If you buy a regular box you can order any of the specials. The specials usually are meat combos of some sort. Like you can get a ‘grill box” for $20-22 . The box will have steaks, hamburgers, brats, pork chops, etc. The meats are all high quality food. We have not had one bad ‘box’ yet. You don’t have to meet any income requirements at all BUT food stamps are welcome. Someone with food stamps would get twice as much food with AFM than if they took the stamps and used them at a regular store. So how does Alison make Angel Food Ministries work for a family of 7. I usually order 3 regular boxes and 2 specials at $134 or so. We pick up on a Saturday morning getting about $250 of food for just the $134. We bring it home and I look over everything. I mentally start to figure out what meals I’m going to make with this month’s order. Then within a few days I go the the grocery and pick up the extra things I think I’ll need. Like I said it’s kind of complicated to understand until you do it your self a month or two…but AFM would be a great way to shave a $100 off of your monthly grocery bill.

I love it when my friends pass along great money saving tips! Feel free to send some tips my way or let me know if some of these tips have been helpful to you!

WFMW: Weekend getaways on a shoestring!

I love weekend getaways…getaways with my hubby, getaways with my family, getaways with my girlfriends! Getaways can be quite expensive when you factor in hotel rooms, food, etc. I have found a few things that make these weekends much easier on my budget.

Hotels
- I like to use Hotwire.com. I used them in November and stayed at a 4 star hotel in Chicago for $89/night! I used them around Thanksgiving and stayed at a Hampton Inn in Indianapolis for $35/night. I used them last weekend and stayed at a Signature Inn for $35/night and I’m using them this weekend to stay at a Doubletree for $52.

Food- I try to plan out our eating in advance! This weekend when we go to Indy, I had to come up with something for dinner Saturday night and all three meals on Sunday. On Saturday night, we’ll eat at a restaurant using a Restaurant.com gift certificate. You can save 80% on Restaurant.com certificates by using the code “DINE”. We typically spend about $25 OOP for a family of 4 when we use one of these certificates and we eat quite well! I’m also planning on eating lunch and dinner on Sunday using coupons. I also try to bring snacks from home with me for when we all get the munchies in the hotel room. This is a whole lot cheaper than vending machines and room service!!!

Our weekend away including gas, meals, and hotels will probably cost us around $125…not too bad considering we’re a family of 4 and a typical hotel room costs that much!

That’s what “works for me!” Head on over to We Are THAT Family for Works for Me Wednesday!

Time for Menu Plan Monday!!!

Menu planning is a great money saving tool! I don’t know why I don’t take advantage of it more often. The weeks (and months) when I plan my meals in advance, I save tons of time and money (not to mention headaches) and my family ends up with dinner on the table with a lot less whining! I’m going to try to be better about posting my menu plan weekly although I can’t make any promises. Here are this week’s dinners:

Monday- Italian chicken, broccoli, and pasta
Tuesday- Teriyaki chicken, green beans, and brown rice
Wednesday- Soft tacos
Thursday- Eggs and bacon (and maybe waffles)
Friday- Spaghetti and garlic bread
Saturday- We’ll be in Indy so it looks like we’re eating out (Maybe we’ll eat at TGI Friday’s and take advantage of this Buy One Entree, Get One Free coupon!
Sunday- We’ll still be in Indy (I’ll have to see what other great deals or coupons I can find!)

If you have started menu planning, I encourage you to post it somewhere (It makes you more accountable!) You can post it on your fridge (This works well at my house and keeps complaining to a minimum!) If you have a blog, you can blog about it and link over to Menu Plan Monday. If you don’t want to post it on your fridge and you don’t have a blog, (or if you just want me to know what’s cooking at your house so I know what night to invite myself over), feel free to leave your menu plan in a comment! Happy eating!!!

Where did the weekend go?

Wow! This weekend went by way too fast! I can’t believe Monday is almost here. I didn’t do the normal grocery planning and coupon matchups that I would do over a weekend, but I guess I can catch up on it tomorrow! If you see any great deals or matchups out there, please leave me a comment or send an email, so I can let everyone know! Hope you had a great weekend!
