This might be the shortest Menu Plan Monday ever…since we’ll only be in town 2 nights. I’m leaving at before 4 am on Wednesday and the kids will be with their grandparents being spoiled rotten the rest of the week while Fred and I celebrate our anniversary!

Monday – Fajita style pot roast with onions, green peppers, and fajita seasoning

Tuesday – Baked Ziti leftovers

I’m Losing It!

When I shared with you my New Year’s Goals last year, one of them was to lose 1 pound a week for a total of 50 pounds this year.  (I have at least 80 to lose, but I figured I’d try to be realistic! You’d think that wouldn’t be too hard, but a love affair with Coca-Cola and those darn Girl Scouts and their cookies has made this way tougher than I would have imagined.  I actually gained 3 pounds the week that the Girl Scouts brought those cookies around!

I joined Weight Watchers at the end of January and have lost 3 pounds since joining (It would have been 6 if I hadn’t gained 3 pounds the week the Girl Scouts made me eat all those cookies).  I’ve also been soda free for the last 6 days!

I really want to do a better job in setting an example for my family in regards to eating healthy and exercising, but I really need some help!  If any of you have been successful at losing weight, I’d love to hear from you!  If you have exercising tips, I’d love to hear those too!  In the meantime, I’m sure you’ll be hearing more about my weight loss journey. Don’t worry, I’ll be the first to let you know what seems to be working!

Great Groupon Deals Today!

If you live in a city that has Groupon, you need to check out their deals!

Some of today’s deals include the following:

Chicago: $59 for Dental Exam, Cleaning, Digital X-Rays, and Fluoride Treatment at So-Well Dental Associates

New York: $49 for Three Hours of Housecleaning from Today’s Maid Service ($98 Value)

Phoenix: $22 for Two Baseline Spring Training Baseball Tickets at Camelback Ranch ($40 Value). Buy Here for White Sox vs. Dodgers on Friday, March 5, at 1 p.m. See Below for Additional Games and Prices.

And there are plenty of other good ones out there too!

What is Groupon?

Each day, Groupon features an unbeatable deal on the best stuff to do, see, eat, and buy in your city. By promising businesses a minimum number of customers, we get discounts you won’t find anywhere else. We call it “collective buying power!”

I like today’s deal – how do I get it?

Just click “BUY” before the offer ends at midnight. If the minimum number of people sign up, we’ll charge your card and send you a link to print your Groupon. If not enough people join, no one gets it (and you won’t be charged), so invite your friends to make sure you get the deal!

What happens if the Groupon doesn’t reach its required minimum number of purchasers?

If not enough people sign up, then the deal is canceled, and you won’t be charged. Better luck next time! So if you really want the Groupon, be sure to either beg or threaten your friends .

Do I need to use my Groupon the same day I buy it?

No. Many Groupons have an expiration date, but you never have to use them on the date of purchase.

I bought a Groupon – how do I use it?

Once you’re charged, you’ll receive an email with a link to sign in and print your Groupon. The Groupon has redemption instructions and a map right on it!

Can I buy a Groupon as a gift for someone else?

Yes. We communicate with all the businesses that we work with that Groupons can be gifted, and unless the Fine Print specifically states otherwise, gift away! To have us send them the gift, select the gift option at checkout.

The Twelve Months of Christmas: Start Making a List

Last month, I shared about Planning Ahead for Christmas using Swagbucks and shopping online through cashback sites. This month, I’m going to share another way of planning ahead!

Make a list and check it twice! You’ll want to include every person you think may make your Christmas list. While it’s important to write down people’s names, there will probably be people on your list whose names you may not know now (teachers, people whose names you may draw in a gift exchange, service people you regularly interact with, etc). Make sure to also include people your children give gifts to as well as your spouse.

After making an extensive list of everyone who you think you will buy for, you need to begin brainstorming. Think about what each person likes and what you think they’d enjoy receiving. You’ll also want to set a budget for each person. (Hopefully you are regularly setting aside money in your general budget for Christmas and other gifts.) For example, if you’re spending limit is $5 for Aunt Sally and you know that Aunt Sally loves to cook, you may want to consider purchasing a Taste of Home cookbook while they’re on sale for only $5 instead of $24.99. If you have little ones on your list, you’ll want to check the clearance section of the toy stores you regularly shop at or check the Amazon toy section regularly. There are plenty of deals to be found for a fraction of what you’d normally pay. Last year, I was able to purchase the majority of my gifts at 75% off (many of them were closer to 90% off).

If you’re like I was before I started my frugal journey, you’re probably thinking “She may have gotten them on sale, but they probably weren’t that great!” I’d like to share a few of the gifts I was able to buy:

Although these are normally over $40 each, I was able to purchase them for only $2.99 thanks to a clearance deal and coupon at Target. That’s 92% off!

This Trivial Pursuit game sells for $44, but I was able to find it on clearance at Wal-Mart last year for $6. Since my family loves to play Trivial Pursuit, this made a great gift for my dad (I was especially excited since he’s the hardest person in my family to shop for)!

If you’re looking for winter clothes to give for Christmas, most department stores have theirs dramatically marked down on clearance. We were able to find cool clothes for our girls last weekend at Sears. We found tee-shirts for under $3 and novelty sweatshirts for around $6. I’ll probably pick up a few more to save for gifts throughout the year.

Lastly, make sure you keep your list with you and make sure you update it regularly. If you have a smart phone, you can always make a list in google docs or put it somewhere else on the web where you can easily access it and update it. I made this mistake last year. There were a few times throughout the year that I found the “perfect gift”, put it in my “gift closet” (actually it goes in bins in my office closet, but I call it the gift closet anyway since it sounds cooler), and forgot to mark it off the list, only to find myself scrambling at Christmas time to come up with a present for that person. I was surprised that I had about 8 gifts that I hadn’t marked off my gift list. (It was a pleasant surprise since that was 8 less gifts I had to buy around Christmas time).

Did you miss the beginning of this series? Don’t worry, you can catch up.

Top Ten Things To Do At Disney World

Last Wednesday, we returned from a wonderful week at Disney World.  I was thrilled to be a part of the Disney Social Media Moms Celebration and the rest of my family was thrilled to be at Disney World.  This was my girls’ first visit to Disney World, so we stayed quite busy.  Since we’ve been home, we’ve been asked a zillion times what our favorite things at Disney World are.  We’ve compiled a list of our favorite Disney experiences. So without further ado…

Top Ten Things To Do At Disney World (as determined by our family)!

1. Magic of Disney Animation Drawing Class (Hollwood Studios) – Each 30 minute class teaches you how to draw a different Disney character (and to top it off, you get to keep your drawings.) You can’t beat free souvenirs. We skipped the movie and just went straight to the class.

2. Tower of Terror (Hollywood Studios) – This has been a favorite ride of mine since it opened in 1994.

3. Toy Story Mania (Hollywood Studios) – During our Friday night dinner at Hollywood Studios, the Disney Social Media Moms (and their families got to ride Toy Story Mania over and over again.  We probably would have gone on it more times than we did, but after 5 times, my arm was hurting).

4. Everest Expedition (Animal Kingdom) – I absolutely loved this ride and so did the rest of my family! It was fun, a little bit scary, and best of all, it didn’t give me a headache like some roller coasters!

5. Kilimanjaro Safari (Animal Kingdom) – I loved the variety of cool animals we saw and were able to take pictures of.

6. It’s Tough to be a Bug (Animal Kingdom) – I totally didn’t expect to enjoy this, but since our friends were going  to see it, we joined them. I’m so glad we did.  It’s a short 3D movie and multimedia show and it’s really cool!

7. Space Mountain (Magic Kingdom) – When I think of Disney World, Space Mountain is always the first ride that comes to mind. I had to “make” one of my kids go on this ride, but after the first time, she enjoyed it so much that we rode it over and over again!

8. Splash Mountain (Magic Kingdom) – I was so disappointed that this wasn’t open while we were there, but that doesn’t diminish my love for it.

9. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad (Magic Kingdom) – This is another favorite from way back, but it was just as fun as I remembered it to be.

10. Test Track (Epcot) – I didn’t expect to enjoy this as much as I did.  It was really fast and I loved the cool road conditions.

(Bonus: Rock N Roller Coaster (Hollywood Studios) – Our girls absolutely loved this. I rode it twice and thought it was really fun, but it’s extremely loud and it jarred my head around, so it wouldn’t make my personal top 10.  Fred and the girls all think this should have made the Top 10, so I included it.)

Disclosure: I paid a small fee to attend the conference, but it was drastically less than what I would have normally paid for park admission and WDW resort lodging.  Disney also provided us with great perks including gifts, meals, and a golden ticket (otherwise known as a media fast pass). Disney did not ask me to post about the conference, however since it was one of the best experiences of my life, you’ll probably see lots of posts.
