Book Review: The Money Saving Mom’s Budget {The Best Book I’ve Read in a Long Time}

Have you ever read one of those books that was challenging, convicting and encouraging all at the same time?  I just finished one.  It’s called The Money Saving Mom’s Budget: Slash Your Spending, Pay Down Your Debt, Streamline Your Life, and Save Thousands a Year by Crystal Paine and it’s one of the best books I’ve read in years.

I’ve been a big fan of Crystal Paine’s website Money Saving Mom since we started working on our finances.  When I found out she was looking for bloggers to review her new book, I jumped at the chance.  Although I have to be quite honest, I wondered how much I’d actually get from it as we’ve already made huge progress in the area of finances.

When the book arrived, I quickly dove in and I was oh-so-pleasantly surprised.  It’s an amazing book.

The first 2 chapters alone are worth the price of the book and they don’t even talk about setting a budget or using coupons.

In Chapter 1, If You Don’t Know Where You’re Going, Any Train Will Get You There, Crystal talks about the importance of setting goals and how to break your goals down to bite-size chunks.  She even has worksheets to make it easy.

In Chapter 2, Are The Chaos and Clutter of Your Life Keeping Your From Financial Success, Crystal addresses tackling our clutter.  Clutter is one of my biggest problems and I loved her approach to it.  I actually read half the chapter out loud to my husband and daughters.

Although I wasn’t sure how much clutter has to do with financial success, I knew it was something I need to work on so I decided to go after it.  Boy was I surprised at how wrong I’d been.

When we tackled our kitchen, I ended up throwing away a bunch of food that was expired.  Cake mixes and cookie mixes that were “free” with coupons, but never used.  I also found lots of coupons for “free” items that were stuffed in a drawer.  They were all expired (and some of them would have come in quite handy). I also found lots of things that we’re no longer using and in our kitchen alone we took a 27 gallon tote of stuff to Goodwill.

The rest of the book tackles the nitty-gritty of finances in a way that anyone can understand.  Crystal shares how to set up a budget, how to save money by going cash only, how to coupon effectively, how to save money on your grocery bill without using coupons, how to go out on the town without spending a fortune, and most importantly, how to find contentment where you’re at.

Crystal and her family know first hand how to live frugally.  There have been times in her life where Crystal and her husband lived on $650 a month.  Since then, they’ve increased their income, but have continued to live frugally.  Because of that, she and her husband were able to pay cash for their first home.  Her methods really work and her book will break it down in easy steps for you to follow.

Her book just came out today, so hurry and snag a copy of it now.  It’s seriously life changing!  {And all of the profits from this book go to support Compassion International>}

Amazon Kindle PDF
I love to read. There’s nothing like losing yourself in a mystery or laughing and crying your way through the latest chick-lit.  And though I truly love the look, the feel, and the smell of books, over the last year I’ve become a devoted fan of eBooks…specifically free eBooks!

Here are a few of my reasons for switching!

1.  eBooks do not clutter up your house.

I am hopelessly disorganized…and hopelessly disorganized people end up with stacks and stacks of books.  Not good!

2.  eBooks are eco-friendly.

I’m not a tree-hugger, I don’t always recycle, and I still sometimes buy bottled water…but I do still desire to be a little greener! :-)

3.  eBooks are searchable.

I’m always searching for some elusive fact I read in a book.  And of course when I want to quote that fact, I can never find what page it is on.  Most eBook platforms (computers, Kindles, iPads) allow you to search through a book for specific text.  {I love this feature!}

4. eBooks save money.

Most eBooks are priced below the cost of paperback or hardcover books.  While that alone is a cost saver, I can’t even begin to tell you about the number of books I’ve downloaded for free from Amazon.  Many of these books are only free for a short amount of time, but if each week you download 2 free books that would have regularly cost you $10 each, you’ve saved over $1000 in a year! {Click here and then Choose the tab that says Top 100 Free in the bottom right corner}

5.  eBooks are light as a feather.

The only books my husband reads are computer programming books…big, heavy, strain-your-back-when-you-lift-them books.  He tends to like to take a few of them on vacation (and that makes it seriously difficult for me to pack all the shoes I need while still staying under the 50 pound per bag weight limit).  It is amazing to me that he can read all the computer programming books he wants on a device that weighs less than a can of Coke!

If you don’t have a Kindle or iPad, you can still get and read free books!

Resolutions Revisited

This year has been flying by!  I had grand intentions of posting monthly updates on my New Year’s Resolution progress, but that obviously hasn’t happened!  Since we’re almost halfway through the year, I thought I’d give you an update on where I am this year!  Since I originally linked my New Year’s Resolutions to Top Ten Tuesday over at OhAmanda, I thought it was only fitting that I link my update!

1. Lose weight (average at least one pound/week for the year)

So far this year, I’ve lost 45 pounds!  I’ve worked my tail off, but it’s been totally worth it!

2. Exercise at least 10,950 minutes

So far this year, I’ve exercised 5,490 minutes! That’s over 91 hours!  I’m pretty sure there’s a direct correlation between the time spent exercising and the weight loss!

3. Stick to our budget…every single month!

I am horrified and ashamed to tell you that we haven’t been doing a great job of sticking to our budget.  Although we haven’t been overspending, we haven’t really been tracking like we should and we haven’t sat down for a “budget update” in months! {hanging head in shame}

4. Track all of our income and spending.

This ties directly in to the above resolution!  We definitely need to get back on track with our budget meetings and tracking our spending!

5. Read through the entire Bible.

I made it through the entire Bible, however I didn’t make it in 90 days as planned.  It took closer to 150.  I’ll be starting the Bible in 90 Days again on July 5th.  Feel free to join me!

6. Take a trip with the kids to Disney World or Disney Land.

In February, our family headed to Disney World for the Disney Social Media Moms Conference!  It was an absolutely amazing trip!  I can’t say enough good things about Disney!  I wish we could visit Disney every month!!!

7. Post at least 5 times/week on my blog.

Although there are a couple of weeks where I missed the mark on this one, for the most part, I’ve posted at least 5 times each week!

8. Try 2 new recipes per month.

I’ve tried at least 1 new recipe each month, but I’ve been in a terrible rut with our busy schedule!  Hopefully this will improve over the next few months!

9. Read 1 book or listen to 1 audiobook each week.

I’ve made it through 17 books this year (so I’m a little behind schedule), but I’ve been much more consistent lately with the audio books, so that’s definitely helped.

10. Take a creative writing or public speaking class.

I didn’t sign up for a formal class, but I did join Toastmasters.  I’ve been amazed at how much my public speaking has improved.  My husband, my mom, and my dad all joined as well and it’s been so fun to do this with them!

So there you have it!  Overall, I’m pretty happy about what I’ve accomplished so far this year!

I’d love to hear how are you doing with your New Year’s Resolutions! Leave me a comment!   If you’ve blown it, it’s not too late to get back on track or start over with new goals!

Free Copy of Rich Dad, Poor Dad
