Bieber Fever Has Invaded Our Home {Giveaway}

Justin Bieber Never Say Never DVD

When I heard countless moms talk about their kids’ obsession with Justin Bieber, I secretly thought “Thanks goodness my girls aren’t obsessed with him.”  To be quite honest, my girls never shared an opinion one way or another about him UNTIL the movie Justin Bieber: Never Say Never came out.  My youngest daughter went to see it on opening night with the girls on her basketball team.  She came home raving about how great Justin Bieber is and begging to download his music to her iPod.  I was kind of surprised because for months she had expressed disinterest in Justin Bieber.

The next weekend, my oldest daughter went to see Never Say Never and came home talking about how cute Justin Bieber is and what a great movie it was and asked if she could download Justin Bieber to her iPod.  It was like aliens had taken over my children!

Don’t get me wrong…I don’t have anything against Justin Bieber, I just didn’t see what the big deal was.  Sure, I like his music and sing along with it when it comes on the radio, but I like lots of music.  Then I started watching the movie and all I can say is Baby, Baby, Baby, Oh! He’s just so cute.  I can see why the girls like him so much.  Justin Bieber: Never Say Never was the highest grossing concert themed film ever in U.S. history which is not surprising seeing as both of my girls saw it twice in the theater.

The movie is a really interesting look at the life of Justin Bieber, both onstage and off.  You’ll watch as he interacts with his mom, various music industry pros and fans.

And after waiting a long time, Justin Bieber: Never Say Never is now out in DVD and Blu-Ray.

A Day of Yes

YES
One of my goals this year (and every year) is to continue growing as a wife and mom.  I love and cherish my family and I want them to know that they’re my priority, but I don’t always do a great job of showing it.

I recently read a story on MarriageMax that totally inspired me.  (If you’ve never heard of Marriage Max, it’s a marriage counseling alternative.  Instead of marriage counseling, MarriageMax.com offers marriage fitness. While I’ve never tried Marriage Max, I think the concept of becoming the spouse you need to be instead of trying to change your spouse is a great one!)  The author talked about taking each of his kids away for a mini-vacation and saying yes to all their requests during those trips.  What a cool concept.

Our kids and our husbands are so accustomed to hearing us say no, that they’d probably be floored if we said yes to them for one whole day (OK…maybe your husband and kids wouldn’t be, but mine would be!)  When your husband asks you to grab him a drink, say yes with a smile and ask what he’d prefer.  When your kids ask you to go to the park and swing, do it…even if it means the dinner dishes won’t get washed til later.

Have you ever thought of having “A Day of Yes” at your house or have your ever had “A Day of Yes”?  You don’t have to say yes to everyone in one day.  You don’t even have to tell anyone.  It can be our little secret.  Just choose a day and say yes to everything your husband and/or kids request.*  Who knows? It could be habit forming!

*Disclosure: I am not recommending that you say yes to anything that would be unsafe for your family!  Just say yes to all the common little questions that we tend to put off with a “not today” or a “not right now”.

My Job Chart: A Great Way to Teach Kids About Work and Money

My Job Chart Teaching Kids to Work

Three years ago, my husband and I had a staggering amount of debt.  As we struggled to get out from under this mountain of debt, I vowed that I would do my best to to make sure my kids have good money management skills so that they never have to go through what we’ve gone through. After lots of discussion between my hubs and I on the best way to teach our kids how to handle money, we decided to try using a chore chart.

I came up with a list of chores, divided them up between the girls, and created Excel spreadsheets that I printed out for them to check off.  Over the past 2 years, we’ve struggled with getting chores checked off, losing chore charts, not knowing whether the kids had been paid their allowance, and more.

I knew that we needed something different, but I wasn’t sure what that something different was.  And to be quite honest, since my daughters are teens, I wasn’t sure I’d find anything that would create any level of motivation to get chores done without nagging or begging.

Enter: My Job Chart

When I found My Job Chart, I knew that I had found the perfect solution for our family.  My Job Chart is a free, online, customizable chore chart system that utilizes cutting edge technology and positive reinforcement to motivate kids to do their chores while teaching them the value of hard work as well as money management.

I was able to set up My Job Chart within minutes and customize it to my family.  Not only was I able to choose specific chores for each of my girls, but I was also able to customize the rewards for getting chores done.  We set up options for monetary rewards, watching TV during the school week (something we don’t allow), and computer time.  I set up daily chores as well as extra chores that they can do to earn extra rewards.

Here’s how My Job Chart works:

How MyJobChart.com Works! from Gregg Murset on Vimeo.

After walking my girls through the process they were pretty excited to get started.   This is the first time in months years that my girls have both made an effort to track their progress.  They’re also learning the correlation between work and rewards.  If they do extra work, they can get extra rewards.  I also added reading and exercise as optional chores that they can earn points for.  I want them to understand the value of expanding their knowledge and taking care of their bodies and attaching a points value to them seems like a good way to do it.  I’m hoping that I’ll be able to create long-lasting habits now that they will carry with them to adulthood!

Suze Orman says My Job Chart revolutionizes the way your teach your family about money

If you’re looking to arm your kids with the tools they need to manage their money wisely, you’ll definitely want to check out My Job Chart.

Similac Strong Moms Baby Journal App for iPhone

I’m a huge fan of the iPhone…and my iPhone rarely is far from me.  I use it to check email, compare prices at the store, track business mileage, get directions, listen to music, and play games.  I’m always on the lookout for apps that save me time, save me money, or save my sanity.

This past week, I have been testing out a new app that I think will be beneficial to many of you with babies.  The Similac Baby Journal iPhone App will track feedings, diaper changes, sleep habits, and growth.  It will even help you predict patterns!  After you’ve downloaded the app, it’s super easy to start using and very self-explanatory.  If you’re a mommy of multiples, you can track the important info of all your little ones by setting up separate profiles for each of your kids.

It doesn’t matter if you’re breastfeeding, bottle-feeding or doing a combination of both, the Baby Journal app has you covered.  There’s an easy to use feeding timer that you can start and stop with the tap of a finger.  If you’re breastfeeding, you can track which side the baby ate from and the time they spent chowing down.  If you’re bottle-feeding, you’ll be able to track how many ounces they ate and how long it took to eat.  You can even call their Feeding Expert 24/7 if you need some expert advice!

It can also track diaper changes…in detail.  You know how new moms like to talk about poop and all the gory details?  Well, I’m not a new mom and I don’t like to talk poop, so all the diaper change options made me gag!  If you’re still in the diaper changing stage, I’m sure you’ll find this to be extremely helpful!  You’ll be the coolest mom on the block when you can not only talk poop, but show graphs and charts with all the pertinent info.

The app also allows you to track sleep and growth.  This information is easily accessible with the tap of a finger and can also be emailed to family, friends, or your pediatrician.

I’m a huge fan of this app and think it is a must have for moms with babies!  It’s a great way to keep track of all the info you need without pushing your sleep-deprived self over the edge…and it’s free!

Click here to download the Similac Baby Journal app.

Disclosure: I was compensated by Collective Bias for my time in reviewing this app.  As always, all thoughts and opinions are honest and are my own.

Family Movie Night {A Giveaway}

One of our favorite frugal family activities is family movie night.  We pop some popcorn, grab blankets and pillows, turn off the lights, and sit in our family room, bundled up and enjoying a good movie.  Although we love to watch things new movies, it can be difficult to find family friendly movies (which is why we watched Elf last weekend for the 50 zillionth time).  That’s why I’m so excited about the movies that P&G and Walmart have partnered together to present!  On Saturday, January 8th, you’ll find our family watching the new  Walmart/P&G family movie Change of Plans on Fox!  Since watching the trailer, I’ve been anxiously waiting for it to air.

Up to this point, Sally Danville’s life has played out just as she hoped it would. As a beautiful and free-spirited musician, she and her fighter-pilot husband, Jason, live life on the go, free of domestic responsibilities. But with a single phone call from Child & Family Services case worker, Dorothy (Phylicia Rashad, “The Cosby Show”), she learns that things don’t always go according to plan. Sally (Brooke White, “American Idol”) is met with the news that her best friend from college has died in a tragic accident on a Peace Corps mission and has named Sally the legal guardian of her four kids – 3 of them adopted from third-world countries. Now Sally and Jason (Joe Flanigan, “Stargate Atlantis”) must quickly learn to parent this instant family and help the kids deal with the culture clash of life in America. The story is both humorous and heartwarming, revealing how fulfilling life can be when you look beyond your own plans and invest in the lives of others.

The Ultimate Family Vacation

Sponsored By

Cheerios® is giving you the chance to win a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, your ultimate family vacation. As part of a paid promotion for their “Do What You Love” Sweepstakes, Cheerios® is sponsoring my post today about what my ultimate family vacation would be. Read mine, Enter the Sweepstakes for a chance to actually win your own fantasy family trip or one of a bunch of other great prizes.

I absolutely love  family time and any time my extended family gets together, there is bound to be lots of talking and lots of laughing.  In this day and age, families that get along and enjoy each others company immensely seem to be a dying breed.

I am so blessed to have this kind of family and I’m fortunate to live by some of them!  We live only a block from my mom and dad and 20 minutes away from my grandma.  Unfortunately, my sister and brother live a lot further away.  My brother is attending college in Pennsylvania and my sister and her family live in Tennessee.  This makes getting together for family gatherings a little more tricky.

This Christmas, we’ll all be getting together for an amazing family vacation.  In 76 days (yep, I’m counting them) thirteen of my favorite people, 4 guys and 9 girls (myself included) ranging in age from less than a year to 83 years old will all be heading to {drumroll please}…Jamaica!!!  That’s right, my mom and dad, my grandma, my brother, my sister and her husband and their three little girls, and my husband, daughters and I will all be going on vacation…together.

Doctors-Cave-Beach

We are all so excited.  Our passports are valid, our plane tickets have been purchased, and our reservations have been made.  I have tracked down a travel version of Trivial Pursuit and BananaGrams is sitting in the drawer of our side table just waiting to be put in my suitcase. In our family, a little friendly competition is  a regular occurrence.

Days will be spent playing in the sand, splashing in the waves, or reading and relaxing by the pool.  Evenings will be spent talking, laughing, and engaging our minds in boisterous games of Trivial Pursuit and BananaGrams.

Sun, sand, and quality family time…for me, it doesn’t get much better than this.

Don’t forget to enter the “Do What You Love” Sweepstakes, for a chance to win your own ultimate family vacation. I was selected for this sponsorship by the Clever Girls Collective, which endorses Blog With Integrity, as I do.

Mommy Guilt and High Fructose Corn Syrup

I used to be a great mom…that was until I had kids!  All those things I thought my kids wouldn’t do…well….they do it!  Sometimes my daughters watch Disney Channel for hours at a time, sometimes we run through the drive through on the way home from games because I didn’t meal plan that week, and sometimes my kids eat Fruit Loops for  breakfast.  Some of you are shocked that my kids don’t get home cooked meals every night and others of you are probably relieved to know you’re not the only one who still lets your kids eat food with high fructose corn syrup in it.  If you’re in the first category, feel free to whip up a double portion of dinner some night and drop it by my house…my family and I would love you forever.  If you’re in the second category, you’re not alone.  I think all moms occasionally suffer from mom guilt.  I’m no exception.  The biggest area of mom guilt for me is what I feed my kids.  I’m constantly bombarded with messages telling me that my kids should be eating non-processed organic foods and that at all costs I should avoid giving them HFCS (high fructose corn syrup).  For those of you who only feed your family organic, non-processed food, I commend you, but for me…it’s just not realistic.

I had the opportunity to participate in a live webinar with multiple doctors, nutritionists, and registered dietitians as well as other bloggers who wanted the scoop on HFCS.  They shared lots of great info with us and even fielded our questions.  Here are a few of the things I learned, some were surprising…some were expected.

  • High fructose corn syrup and table sugar are almost identical and have the same effect on obesity.
  • High fructose corn syrup is made up of 42% fructose and 58% glucose (or 55% fructose and 45% glucose).  Honey is made up of 48% fructose and 52% glucose.  Agave Nectar is made up of 74% fructose and 26% glucose.
  • High fructose corn syrup does not cause people to gain weight! People gain weight when they take in more calories than they use!
  • Fructose is not the same as High Fructose Corn Syrup.
  • The Corn Refiners Association is lobbying to get the name HFCS changed to corn sugar.  They believe this name more accurately reflects what the product is.
  • The obesity epidemic is caused by overindulgence in food in general.  People are consuming way more calories than they need to and are eating way more sweets than necessary.

Last week, I read an article entitled “6 Biggest Lies About Food Busted”.  This article also came to the conclusion that HFCS and table sugar are nearly identical in their makeup and that HFCS is getting a bum rap.

After having a chance to sift through all this info, I’ve come to this conclusion.  Yes, I will still allow HFCS (or maybe I should start calling it corn sugar) to remain a part of my household, but the corn sugar (along with any other sweeteners and sugars in our house) will be used in moderation.  I need to focus on making healthy lifestyle choices for our whole family.  We need to continue to exercise regularly and eat balanced diets that include plenty of fruits and veggies.  Lastly, I need to ditch the mommy guilt!

Disclosure:  The information shared was provided by the Corn Refiners Association. I have been compensated for writing this blog post. All opinions are my own.

Save Money on Dental Bills

One of the best ways to save money on dental bills is preventative maintenance like regular brushing and flossing.  This is easier said than done when it comes to our kids!  Here are some helpful tips to keep your kids smiles healthy and bright!

  • Eat healthy:  Eating nutritious foods isn’t just good for strong healthy bones and organs, it’s also good for strong healthy teeth!
  • Avoid sugary beverages:  Our dentist told us that if we absolutely must drink soda, we are better off drinking a can over a short amount of time and following it up with a cup of water.  If you take small sips over a longer amount of time, the soda has more of a chance to cause tooth decay! Who knew?
  • Treat your kids to sugarless gum after meals: Most kids love the chance to chew gum!  If you don’t eat at home, give your child a piece of sugarless gum like Trident and have them chew it for 20 minutes.  It should help prevent cavities!
  • Have your kids brush at least twice a day and make sure they brush for 2 minutes at a time.  If you need to, have a teeth brushing dance party.  Play a song they like and let them dance around the bathroom sink while brushing their teeth.  When the song is over, they are done brushing their teeth!
  • Visit your dentist regularly for checkups: Take your kids to the dentist twice a year to make sure that they are taking good care of their teeth and gums. Preventative visits are far less expensive than having cavities filled!
