Free and Cheap Weekend Activities and Events

Free Weekend Activities Cheap Weekend Activities SimplifiedSaving.com

Looking for some fun things you can do this weekend that won’t break the budget? As a mom of 4, I totally feel your pain. Family activities can get expensive!!!  With that in mind, I’m sharing this great list of free and cheap events going on across the country!  Some are events that take place on a weekly basis (like Michaels…which we do almost every weekend) and others are one time only events.

If you live in the Fort Wayne area, head out to Glenbrook Square this weekend to check out Canstruction. My family and I love this event. During this event, teams of high school students build really cool structures out of canned goods.  You can then vote on these structures.  They’ll be building the structures this weekend and they’ll be on display for the next week.  At the end of this event, all canned goods will be donated to the food bank!

Make some memories and try a new workshop, lesson, or craft. Share this fun,money-saving list with your friends and family. And, if you know of any others to include, please let us know! It is always best to call ahead and make sure that your local store or retailer is participating to avoid disappointment.

Finding and Living Your Calling

When I was growing up, I wanted to be a singer, then a trauma surgeon, then a singer, then a special ed teacher, then a musician, then a teacher, and by the time I was 3/4 of the way through college, I had no idea what I wanted to be.  After college, I worked a variety of management and sales jobs.  Then I went back to school to study music…again.  I then began teaching piano lessons and singing jazz.  And then I went  back to working another sales job.

Somehow I found myself in my mid-thirties, married with kids, and I still had no idea what I wanted to be when I “grew up”.  Although I’ve had lots of great jobs, I always felt like I was created for more. There was a sense of unrest…of unease.  I watched people who were obviously doing what they were created to do and I wondered when I would find my calling.

I now know that I’m not the only one to feel this way.  I’ve had so many conversations with different people who are in that same spot…feeling stuck, but not knowing what they’re looking for and longing for!

The Art of Work 600 Square

If you’re in that spot, I highly recommend that you pick up a copy of Jeff Goin’s new book, The Art of Work.

If you don’t know Jeff, he has one of the fastest-growing blogs in the world and has made waves online with his quickly growing platform.

In the past few years, he’s inspired millions (literally) of people to go beyond the status quo and live a life that matters. And in this new book, he’s encouraging you to discover your true calling, that thing you were born to do.

The message of this book is so important that Jeff wants to get it into as many people’s hands as possible. So for a limited time, you can get it for free (just pay shipping) at this link: The Art of Work

I had the privilege of reading it already and it is soooo worth reading!  If you’re struggling with finding your purpose, pick up a copy of this book!  If your spouse or a friend is struggling, grab a copy for your friend!  You only have to pay shipping!  Plus, Jeff is offering $250 in bonuses if you jump on this. I can’t guarantee that all of the bonuses will be available for long, so if you’re interested, I’d check it out now!

Old Story New Devotional Book: FREE on Amazon

Old Story New

If you’re looking for a family devotional, you’ll want to snag Old Story New!

Filled with adventure, suspense, drama, and mystery, the gospel story easily captures the attention of children. Even better, the gospel story gives life. We are saved and our children are saved as we review the story of the gospel. So why do so many well-intentioned parents give up on family devotions—deciding that reading the Bible as a family must only be for “super parents.” The truth is that there are no super parents. We all struggle, and we all need help to stay on course. Old Story New makes it easy for parents to stay on the life-giving course of sharing the gospel with their family.

The second volume in Marty Machowski’s family devotional series, Old Story New continues the gospel story that started in Long Story Short. Using the same effective ten-minute a day structure, it walks children through the great truths of the Christian faith in the New Testament. Through 78 New Testament stories, Old Story New does the hard work for parents and caregivers. Simple discussion questions (and answers!!) for each day’s devotion help children understand and remember Jesus’ life, death, resurrection, and the birth of the Christian church. Old Story New is a family devotional program designed to explain God’s plan of salvation through the New Testament and is suitable for children from preschool through high school.

365 Day Savings Challenge and a FREE Printable

Yesterday, I shared the 52 Week Money Saving Challenge, but for some of you, saving that much might seem to be a stretch.  Here’s a challenge that will remind you to be mindful of saving every single day.  This challenge starts with saving a penny on day 1, 2 cents on day 2 and so on and so forth.  At the end of 365 days, you’ll have $667.95.

If you have more money at this time of year than later on in the year, feel free to start with $3.65 today and work backwards! Or if you have random change in your pocket, check off that amount!  The goal is to save money every single day.  Maybe you have a particular trip you’d like to save for or maybe you’d like to save for Christmas.  The act of physically putting money in your bank every day is a great reminder to be mindful of what you’re saving for!

Print out this form and check off an amount each day for the next 365 days.  You may be surprised to find that once you get into saving money, you’ll put in a little extra here and there and by the end of the year you may have even more than $667.95.

Happy saving!

365 Day Saving Challenge from SimplifiedSaving.com

52 Week Money Challenge & A Free Printable

One of the questions I get asked most frequently by people who are on a quest to save more money is “How can I possibly save money when I don’t have any extra?”  Usually, if they let me sit down and go over their budget with them, we can find places to save a few extra dollars here and there.  While a few extra dollars may not seem like a lot, you’d be surprised how quickly it can add up!  If you saved $1 this week, $2 the next week, $3 the next week, and so on and so forth, at the end of the year, you’d have $1,378.  That would take care of quite a few Christmas presents!

My 18 year old is taking this challenge currently and has been surprised at how quickly the money adds up!  If you’re hoping to save more this year, consider joining me in taking the 52 Week Money Challenge.  Print off this printable and place it somewhere where you can see it!  Each week, deposit the money into your account, then highlight the amount you deposited and the amount you should now have in your bank account!

If you’re looking for a smaller challenge, make sure to check out my 365 Day Penny Savings Challenge which will allow you to save $667.95 in a year!
