10 Ways to Make Money from Home

10 Ways to Make Money from Home

Whether you’re looking to make a little extra money to make ends meet, trying to make extra money for a vacation, saving for Christmas or looking to replace a full time income, working from home can be a great option for you!  My husband has worked from home for the last 14 years (with the exception of 1 year where he worked at a physical location) and I’ve worked from home for the last 3 years.  We have both thoroughly enjoyed the flexibility and  freedom that working from home provides.  Don’t get me wrong, it’s called working from home for a reason…mainly, that it’s still work.  If you’re looking for a get rich quick scheme, you’ve come to the wrong place! :) Here are 10 ways to make money from home!

1.  Get Crafty

If you are artistic and you love to craft, this is for you!  You can make money selling your crafts.  If you prefer graphic design, consider creating t-shirts and selling them on CafePress.

2.  Donate Plasma

I have a good friend who gives plasma twice a week.  She and her husband use this money to fund vacations, Christmas and more.  Donating plasma is a completely safe process and helps to save lives.  Most plasma centers pay between $20 and $50 per visit and you can donate twice a week.  Many also offer special incentives when you refer new donors.

3.  Take Surveys

Taking surveys isn’t a huge money maker, however, if you’re home and sitting in front of a computer anyway, you might as well make a few bucks!  Please keep in mind that is very rarely worth your time to take a survey for a chance to win a prize.  Stick to surveys that offer actually points or money (depending on which company you’re with). Here are a few reputable companies to check out!

4.  Become an Online Tutor

If you’re looking to make money without a lot of upfront costs, becoming an online tutor may be the right thing for you.  Most tutoring gigs start at $9/hour but if you have specialized knowledge, you can earn between $30 and $50 per hour.

Here are some companies to look intoL

Kaplan

Tutor.com

eTeacher

5.  Listia

Listia.com is an online auction site like eBay, only no money exchanges hands.  You can buy and sell things using credits.  If you’re looking to make money, consider selling things you have around the house for credit and using your credits to purchase gift cards to Amazon.com and Kohl’s.  Then use those gift cards to purchase items you would have purchased with cash.  Pocket the cash and it’s like you made money!  Sign up here to get 1000 free credits!

6. Sell Your Stuff

If you have extra stuff around your house, you can sell it and make some extra money!  You can sell stuff online on eBay, Amazon.com, or Craigslist.  You can also have a garage sale.  Make sure your stuff is clean and in good working order.  If you’re planning on selling online, make sure you take good pictures and that your description is thorough.

7.  Amazon Trade In Store

If you’ve never traded stuff in on Amazon, you’re missing out.  You can trade in textbooks, electronics and more.  I have a reader who traded in 2 electronics and 1 textbooks and got $250.  You even get a prepaid shipping label.

8.  Childcare

If you like kids, childcare is a great way to make some extra money.   Consider doing a mom’s morning out or a mom’s night out once a week.  Set your hours, set your price, and let your mommy friends know!  If you’re interested in setting up an in-home day care, there may be local and state regulations that you need to adhere to.

9.  Pet Sitting

Some people like kids…some like pets!  If you’re one of those people who prefer furry friends over the human variety, then pet sitting may be for you.  You can offer to keep animals while people are on vacation, visit their home to walk and feed their animals or some mix of the 2.

10.  Direct Sales

If you’re looking to make a full time income, direct sales is a great way to do it.  In fact, 82% of women in the US who make more than $100,000 per year, do it through direct sales.  There are over 250 direct selling companies to choose from, so you should be able to find a company that’s a good fit for you.

My personal favorites are Nerium, Plexus, and Younique as they are products I love and use every day.  If you’re looking for a company or a rep near you, check out BestDirectSalesCompany.com.

Creative Summer Jobs for Teens

School is almost out here in Indiana and with the end of school comes more free time for teens. As a mom of 2 teenagers, I know firsthand that lots of teens are looking for summer jobs so they can make a little (or a lot of) extra money.

When it comes to summer jobs for teens, some creativity and out-of-the-box thinking can go a long way. This is especially true this year since the job market isn’t what it once was. With a little extra brain power, you may be able to carve out an employment niche for yourself. Here are some ideas for creative summer jobs for teens.

1. Deliveries

Do you have a bike? You may find summer work making deliveries for local businesses. As businesses seek to keep costs down, a teen on a bicycle is a more affordable option than a delivery company. It also helps businesses avoid sending one of their own employees out of the office to make deliveries.

2. Pet Sitting

During the summer, a lot of pet owners are looking for an affordable way to have their pets cared for while they’re out of town. Boarding pets can be expensive, and some pet owners opt out of conventional vaccination schedules, making boarding impossible (boarding kennels generally require updated vaccinations). So you could potentially make money while helping other people save money – that’s a win-win! The more experience and references you have, the better; if you have horse-keeping experience, for instance, that can help expand your employment opportunities.

3. Look No Further Than Yourself

If you can’t work at a traditional company this summer, go into business for yourself instead. There are so many possibilities! Here are some thoughts for your own creative business this summer:

  • Website designer
  • Lawn and garden care
  • Mother’s helper (you babysit in the children’s home with their mother or a parent present)
  • Visiting shut-ins or those in nursing homes (family members would hire you to visit with their elderly relatives; no professional healthcare involved – just visiting and cheering them up)
  • House cleaning
  • Car washing
  • Portrait drawing

If you have a skill, you can use it to make money. Are you artistic? Consider painting murals. Do you have computer skills? Many adults are willing to pay someone to have them help with computer tasks. If you can make money doing something you love, it won’t feel like work!

4. Farming

Okay, you probably don’t have a farm ( although if you do, this could be a real money maker for you!). If you can find a piece of land, you can grow your own produce and sell it at your local farmers’ market. If you don’t have the land at your own home, some people who do have farms are willing to rent you a piece of land or let you farm a piece for a fee. You can also get a job helping farmers with their farming. When I was in junior high, a lot of my friends detassled corn. (I don’t even know exactly what that means, but I know they made good money doing it.)

Get creative! Think about what you’re good at and see if you can get someone to pay you for doing it. Find a way to make your skills useful to others. If you can make money doing what you love, it won’t feel so much like a job! :)

How to Add & Sell a Pattern on Craftsy

(This post contains affiliate links which means I will be compensated if you purchase after clicking these links.)

I absolutely LOVE Craftsy!  It’s a great resource online courses and craft supplies, but did you know that you can also use Craftsy to make money? Yep, it’s true!  Craftsy has an independent online pattern store that lets anyone upload and sell downloadable e-patterns with no fee!

How do you add a pattern to Craftsy and start your pattern store? It’s easy!

1. Make sure you have a Paypal account. All pattern transactions happen through Paypal, and Craftsy requires that you have a Student, Premier, or Business account in order to sell patterns.
2. Put your pattern in .pdf format. You can’t upload any patterns to the online pattern store unless they’re a .pdf file format, so if they’re currently saved as a Word doc, .jpg, or other file format, you must convert it to a .pdf before you upload it to Craftsy.
3. Include a photo. All patterns must have at least one photo to accompany them, but you can add up to five photos. Colorful, interesting photos tend to work the best for catching our members’ eyes!
4. Fill out the pattern description. We will ask you some basic questions around your pattern making it easier for Craftsy folk to find your pattern and know what your pattern is for. Make sure you have info about your pattern handy for this step.

For more information on how to sell a pattern through Craftsy, or to get started, visit Craftsy today!

How To Make Extra Money for Christmas Selling Crafts

With Christmas just 2 short months away, you may find yourself looking for ways to earn extra money.  If you enjoy creating and you constantly hear people telling you that you should sell your creations, it may be time to voyage into the world of selling your crafts for money. Like all things, entering the world of selling crafts should be carefully planned out.

Online venues are a great way to reach customers all over the world. Popular websites like Etsy, Artfire and eBay are great tools that help to reach your targeted customers.  There are also great places to sell your crafts offline.  Before making the plunge into selling your crafts, be sure to take the time and do some research beforehand. Keep the following questions in mind as you consider the prospect of selling your creations:

Do I have a product that people would want to buy?

This is the most important question you have to ask yourself. If there is no target market for your products, you will have a hard time selling your creations.  You may create incredible items, but they may not sell because  they’re not in demand.

Who is my potential target market?

This is a continuation of the question above because you need to know who to advertise to and how to successfully draw your target market to your items. It would be a waste of time trying to sell baby clothes, for example, to those who do not have children.

What will I charge for my creations?

Pricing is an important strategy. All too often, people undercharge for their creations forgetting to take into consideration the time and materials that go into a product. Make sure you account for both the cost of the materials as well as the time and effort you put forth to create your goods. Also be sure not to overcharge. You may find that your items do not sell because they are over priced.

Where will I sell my items?

With Christmas just around the corner, you will see Holiday Bazaars, Handcrafted Marketplaces and Craft Shows popping up all over the place.  Many of these are 1 or 2 day events where you can purchase a table to display your crafts.  This is typically an inexpensive way to get your feet wet in the world of selling crafts. You can also try finding a local store that will sell your items on consignment.  If you choose to go this route, be sure to get all terms in writing. Otherwise you run the risk of having your items kept and not paid for.

Online websites are plentiful when it comes to selling handmade goods. There are websites such as Etsy and Artfire who only allow the sales of handmade goods, along with supplies. EBay is also another popular venue to sell handmade goods. Be aware though, that you will be competing with the other goods that are not handmade and may be cheaper. A good description of the item and its benefits is always a good idea.

It is very possible in today’s day and age to make some spending money selling your crafts. Be sure to do your research and follow through your plan by keeping the above questions in mind. Once you have your plan in mind, go ahead and take the plunge. But remember, like anything else, you will get in return what you put forth so make it worth your while.

If you’ve made money selling crafts, do you have suggestions I missed?

Use Your Spare Time to Take Paid Surveys

This is a guest post by Jessica Wagner.  Thanks Jessica!

Lady Blogger Seated at Her Desk, after Louis Léopold Boilly

If you have time to read this, then you have time to take a survey!

Being paid to take surveys is no joke with Survey Head. They’ve been entrusted by companies for years to conduct the surveys these companies use to improve the products and services you and I use everyday.

Survey Head rewards survey takers with Amazon and iTunes gift cards, magazine subscriptions, and even cash!

If you sign-up right now, you’ll get $5.00 in cash right away. But so long as you fill out surveys in your spare time, that’s just the beginning of the rewards you’ll receive.

You can save on anything that can be purchased via Amazon – that includes electronics, clothing, and housewares – just by taking a little time out of your day to tell companies what you think about their products.

In this heat, you can’t beat an arrangement as cool as this.

Earn Money Online

One of the questions I get asked most often is this: How can I make money online? Most of the people I hear this from are looking for ways to add a little extra to their budget without having set hours.  They’re looking for a way to earn something during those late night feedings while they’re starting blankly into their computer monitor.  They’re not looking to get rich…just to be able to go out to eat from time to time.

I thought I’d put together a list of survey companies and companies who pay you to read emails, etc.  Some of these will work  better than others.  Some companies will be a perfect fit for you and will offer you lots of opportunities, some of them will not be a good fit for you, but will be perfect for someone else who is reading today.

Check them out…sign up for one of them or sign up for all of them.  If you are hoping to make money doing surveys, etc, I highly recommend setting up a separate email just for surveys and such…otherwise your inbox will quickly become overwhelming!
