One of the greatest benefits of becoming debt free has been the freedom to give more. When we were drowning in debt, even tithing seemed daunting at times and giving anything above and beyond our tithe seemed like an impossibility.
When we finally began to see a light at the end of our tunnel of debt, we began to talk about how we’d use our “extra money”. We knew we wanted to save more, but we also desired to give more. There were missionaries we wanted to support and we wanted to get involved with Compassion.
When we finally had enough “wiggle room” in our budget, we decided to sponsor 2 Compassion children. I chose little girls that had the same birthdays as our girls so that we would remember their birthdays and feel a little more connected. I love receiving letters from our sponsored children and from their parents.
I recently read Child Sponsorship Is About Relationship Building and realized I needed to do more on my part. I don’t want to just be a sponsor, I want to be an investor! I want to invest in the lives of these girls. I want to pray for them and for their families and share in their lives. I recently heard about Our Compassion, a group of Compassion sponsors who have committed to writing to their sponsored children on the second Friday of every month! I will be joining them and our family will be writing letters for our sponsored children each month.
I’m excited to watch “our children” grow up and am looking forward to developing relationships with their families as well!
If you’ve been looking for a ministry to be involved in or are looking for a place to give, I highly recommend that you consider getting involved with Compassion and investing in the life of a child!
