Fred's Wedding Ring and My Engagement Ring

Last week while we were on vacation, I worried constantly about losing my engagement ring and wedding ring in the ocean.  I even considered taking themt off and putting them in the safe for the week.  While that may seem strange to some of you, it seemed like a perfectly logical fear to me.

During our first year of marriage, my hubby lost his wedding ring in the ocean.  I was crushed!  He hadn’t done it on purpose, but as a fairly new wife who was convinced that her husband should be perfect, I was mad.

For one thing, I thought he should have known better than to put on sunscreen and then wash his greasy, sunscreen covered  hands in the ocean.    Also, instead of going with an inexpensive wedding band for him, we had purchased a ring that cost over $700…on sale!  Yep…definitely not a good day.

I did what any reasonable wife would do when I found out, I insisted that we immediately go to the mall and purchase a new wedding band.  (I know…probably not the best use of a vacation day, but I wanted the whole world to know he was mine.)

We headed to the closest mall which was one of those high end malls with ridiculously expensive stores.  We found a jewelry store and started looking for the perfect ring.

We look at all kinds of rings that day.  We looked at platinum, titanium, and tungsten wedding bands (I thought the black tungsten rings were so cool, but Fred wasn’t enamored with the idea of a black wedding band). My favorites were the engraved tungsten rings (although with as upset as I was, I probably would have engraved “If found, please call…”).

When all was said and done, we settled on a titanium ring.  It was  one of the only rings in the store that didn’t need to be sized.  Since we were on vacation, I didn’t want to wait a few days to get the ring sized.  I just wanted to go back to the beach where I could soak up sun and enjoy some family time.

I had to laugh today as I was thinking about this because in all honesty, until I went looking for our wedding pictures, I couldn’t remember what his first ring looked like.  While it seemed like such a huge deal at the time, in hindsight I can see that I overreacted.

Since that time, I’ve had lots of couples tell me about wedding rings lost…at softball fields, at football games, and yep…like my husband, at the beach.
